Butterflies in 3rd grade

The third grade at AlWood Elementary School studied the life cycle of the butterfly. Students learned about the body parts of butterflies and other insects. They can identify the males by the two black dots on each hind wing. Students each created their own butterfly highlighting the symmetry in their wings. Third graders have also compared and contrasted moths and butterflies and learned how insects can be helpful or harmful to people and animals. They have been lucky enough to watch the metamorphosis first hand in the classroom because of families sending in monarch caterpillars. Releasing them has been a highlight and they hope they make it all the way to Mexico!
